Electric cars production will start in Primorye in 2019

AutostatElectric cars production will start in Primorye in Russia. The construction of Prometheus factory, a joint project of Sumotori Group and its Japanese partners, will begin next year. The first ecological automobiles are planned roll off the conveyors in 2019, as reported by Primorsky Krai press office.

As one may remember, the joint venture of Sumotori with Japanese investors became known a year ago. The relevant agreement has been signed in Tokyo, within the scope of the Primorye business-mission. As told by the general director of Sumotori Group: Vitali Verkeenko, the joint company Prometheus has already obtained resident status at PDA Nadezhdinskaya, a land plot measuring 3.5 hectares. The company is currently developing design documentation. In the meantime, it was decided to proceed to the second stage in the course of project implementation immediately: the full-scale production of electric vehicles at Primorye plant.

“Initially, we planned to convert second hand Japanese automobiles to electric cars, using the preferential advantage of Vladivostok Free Port. However, we can proceed to the second stage of the project immediately, thanks to the rapid developments in EV-technologies, making the full-scale production of ecological automobiles at our joint factory in Primorye, on the site in PDA Nadezhdinskaya” – said Vitali Verkeenko.

The manufacturer has not disclosed the model details of the future Made in Russia electric cars. The investors will begin the construction of the factory next year and the production will start at Prometheus in 2019. The estimated amount of investment in the project is 500 million rubles and the new production will create more than 100 jobs in Primorye.

As announced previously, the Russian government plans to develop subsidy programmes on electric vehicle purchases, preferential car loans and car leasing. The support measures will be aimed at both domestic and foreign electric cars manufacturers, making localised assembly in Russia.

“The government support on the green sector of automotive industry will allow us to improve our business-model and increase our production volume significantly. The subsidies for the manufacturers and buyers of electric cars will definitely stimulate the development of the domestic car industry, as well as making a great contribution to the improvement of the ecological situation of the country” – as highlighted by Vitali Verkeenko.
