Yandex autonomous cars will start the mass transportation in big cities

TASS.- Yandex will be ready to start using autonomous cars for passenger transportation in big cities in 2023. The relevant statement has been made by the press office of the company to TASS.

“The unmanned vehicles are already coping with the simpler traffic systems of smaller cities. We will be ready for mass passenger transportation on the streets of large cities in four years’ time” – said the Business Development Director of Yandex for Driverless Vehicles: Artem Fokin, as cited by the press office.

Yandex has introduced the first five unmanned vehicles to the roads of Moscow in June. The company has received certification in mid-August and started tests on 30 new driverless automobiles in the capital. Yandex plans to launch more than 100 vehicles in total until the end of 2019. All driverless vehicles are at the fourth level of autonomy, which involves a high degree of automation. The system is able to take control of the car and the driver’s participation is not required, except in special circumstances.

Experiments on the usage of unmanned vehicles are currently being conducted on public roads at a number of regions of the Russian Federation. The tests will be carried out for the duration of three years. The starting dates of the usage of autonomous cars will be determined according to the results of the pilot launch.
