Turkish Ford Otosan plant will stop car component supplies to Sollers

Gazeta ru.- Sollers enterprise in Tatarstan may become the first Russian car plant to be seriously affected by the lack of semiconductors in the automotive industry. Turkish Ford Otosan plant, which manufactures car kits for the production of Ford Transit LCVs at Sollers facilities, will suspend operations for at least 6 weeks as of next Monday.

The Russian company assures that the suspension will not have any effect on their operations. Experts, on the other hand, are convinced that problems will still occur even if the conveyor in Elabuga keeps on rolling. Most probably some cars will have to be released incomplete to the warehouses, leading to a reduction in sales.

As stated by the press office of Sollers, besides Ford Otosan, there are both foreign and local partners in the supply chain of the company. Thanks to a well-structured strategy and forecasts, the company has foreseen all possible solutions and methods with the timely delivery of the necessary components. The Elabuga plant currently operates in the normal mode and there are no plans to suspend the production of Ford Transit vehicles, as stated by the company.

The American group of companies Ford Motor has announced the suspension of a number of its factories around the world, as reported by Detroit News on Thursday. The American plants of the corporation in Kansas City, Flat Rock, Chicago, Ohio and Kentucky will be affected by full or partial shutdowns in April and May. However, the longest downtime will take place at the joint venture of Ford in Turkey. The Ford Otosan plant will suspend operations for 46 days, between 19 April – 3 June.

According to the Association of European Businesses (AEB) data, the sales of Ford Transit rose by 12% in Russia in 2020, with 14,000 units.
