Iran Khodro intends to start exporting cars to Russia

RusAutoNews.- As reported by the journal Za Rulem, the top Iranian automaker is keen to prioritize exports to Russia as both countries are under Western economic sanctions, Iran Khodro CEO Mehdi Khatibi was quoted as saying by the International Business Times.

We had good negotiations with Moscow. The Russian market with its opportunities will be one of our important markets. We will start exporting this year,” he said.

The conversation took place during a presentation by Iran Khodro of its latest Rira crossover model at a factory located west of Tehran.

Iran Khodro plans to produce 500,000 vehicles this year, and the company’s goal is to export 100,000 of them annually, compared to less than 20,000 at present.

The Iran Khodro company had already exported cars to Russia between 2007 and 2009, but deliveries were stopped due to low demand.

According to Autostat, as of July 1, 2022, 10.4 thousand Iran Khodro cars were registered in Russia, which are represented by the only Samand model (class C sedan). Almost all of them were produced in 2006-2008.
