The share of foreign brands in Russian LCV market continues to increase

Vedomosti – GAZ Group has sold 72,575 light commercial vehicles in Russia within January-October 2012 period. This figure is 0.7% less than last year’s sales. The group had sold 71,000 and 90,500 vehicles in the years 2010 and 2011 respectively.

The company executives are of the opinion that the drop in sales is not experienced only by GAZ and interpret the under-performance as a general trend, referring to the declining sales figures of other companies. According to Avtostat data, 161,519 LCVs have been sold in the country within the first ten months of the year (+5.6%).

According to experts, the consumers, who choose to wait for the launching of the new model of GAZ: Gazelle Next, have postponed their decision to purchase and the rest opted for foreign models such as; Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Peugeot Boxer. Again according to Avtostat data, Peugeot LCV sales have increased by 15.8% by the end of the first ten months, reaching 12,700 vehicles. 9116 Ford Transits (+44.6%) and 3510 Mercedes Sprinters (+54.8%) have been sold within the same period.

The Russia LCV consumers’ interest is gradually shifting towards foreign models, according to another expert view. On the other hand, the sales of GAZ continue to increase in CIS countries. The number of GAZ vehicles exported to CIS countries within January-October period is 11,300 (+13%). The total number of GAZ sales in domestic and foreign markets has been calculated as 83,875 (+1.1%).
