Thanks to our long-term strategy aimed at the local production strengthening, we have an opportunity to use engine production capacities such effectively, installing 1.6 MPI engine in five models of the Group”, said Marcus Osegowitsch, General Director of Volkswagen Group Rus.
The 1.6 MPI EA211 engine from Kaluga has two versions with 90 hp and 110 hp. The locally-produced petrol engine is already installed in five models of the Group: the Volkswagen Polo and the SKODA Rapid assembled at the Kaluga plant, and the Volkswagen Jetta, the SKODA Octavia and the SKODA Yeti produced in Nizhny Novgorod.
Volkswagen Group Rus contributes to the development of local suppliers. Cylinder block and cylinder head blanks are delivered to Kaluga from the Nemak Ulyanovsk plant producing engine parts from Russian aluminum. Engine electric wiring is supplied by Fujikura Automotive from its factory in Cheboksary. The next big step is localization of crankshaft blanks, which is planned to happen in 2017.
The engine plant was opened on September 4, 2015. The total investment into the plant construction amounted to 250 million euros. The plant with an area of 32,000 m² is located in Kaluga, in the immediate vicinity of Volkswagen automotive facilities.
