HYUNDAI will launch production at the former GM plant in St Petersburg

RusAutoNews.- Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus has plans to acquire the former St Petersburg plant of General Motors and start car production in 2023, as reported by Avto Novosti Dnya. The relevant statement has been made by the Director of External Relations Viktor Vasiliev.

“In October, we took the decision to start the reconstruction of the enterprise, in order to launch the production of new models in 2023” – Vasiliev said.

The company currently makes car production at its own plant in St Petersburg. Additionally, the assembly of the premium models Genesis and KIA Cerato sedan is localised in Kaliningrad. The restyled version of Cerato has been rolling off the conveyor at the enterprise since last summer.

Hyundai purchased the former Russian factory of GM in November last year. The enterprise has been idle since 2015, when the American manufacturer withdrew the budget models of Chevrolet and the entire range of Opel from the Russian market. Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Captiva, Opel Astra, Opel Antara, Opel Mokka and Cadillac models were manufactured at the enterprise between the 2008-2015 period.
